The Magic of Fall in North Idaho

There’s something about fall here in Coeur d’Alene that feels timeless. The air turns crisp, the trees glow golden, and suddenly everything slows down just enough to savor it all. It’s one of my favorite times to photograph because the season itself carries so much nostalgia — the cozy layers, the natural textures, the way the light filters through fading leaves.

Whether you’re planning a photo session, baking something cozy in the kitchen, or exploring our local spots, fall in CDA has so many ways to be enjoyed.

A couple embraces outdoors during autumn with red and orange foliage in the background.

Couples:

Sharing a coffee on a chilly morning, one person holding the cup while the other steals a sip.

Laughing mid-conversation while walking side by side, brushing shoulders.

Sitting on the ground together, leaning back into each other, watching the world pass by.

Holding hands and talking as they wander, stopping to point out the view.

Pulling each other into a hug after one makes a joke, genuine smiles spilling out.

One tucking hair behind the other’s ear, a quiet pause in the middle of the bustle.

Families:

Kids racing ahead on the trail while parents trail behind, hands linked, watching with a smile.

Siblings digging through leaves together, showing mom or dad their “treasures.”

Parents helping zip up coats, tie shoes, or wipe messy hands — the little in-between moments.

Everyone squeezed onto a blanket with kids leaning into laps, telling stories or giggling.

A toddler climbing up on dad’s shoulders, reaching for leaves overhead.

Mom laughing as a child sneaks a bite of the snack meant for “after.”

Seniors:

Laughing as they toss their backpack into the backseat of their car, windows rolled down, music blasting.

Walking down a trail with hands tucked in pockets, stopping to pick up a leaf or kick through the pile on the ground.

Sitting cross-legged on the ground, lost in thought or flipping through a journal.

Caught mid-smile while talking about their favorite thing — a sport, hobby, or dream.

Sitting on a curb downtown with a coffee in hand, sneakers scuffed, just being themselves.

Cozy Fall Recipes

Fall isn’t just about what we see — it’s about what we taste and smell too. It’s the cinnamon drifting through the house on a Saturday morning, the sound of a roast crackling in the oven while you play a board game, the smell of maple caramelizing in a hot pan. These are the little things that make a season feel alive. Here are a few of my favorite cozy recipes for this time of year — ones that make a house feel like home.

Fall Cinnamon Rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting

There’s something magical about cinnamon rolls on a crisp fall morning. They’re soft, spiced, gooey in the middle, and topped with the dreamiest cream cheese frosting. My favorite little trick? Pouring heavy cream over the rolls just before baking — it keeps them pillowy-soft and adds the perfect richness.

You’ll Need:

For the Dough

1 ⅓ cups warm milk (about 110°F)

2 tbsp butter, room temperature

¼ cup sugar

1 packet active dry yeast (the red packet, about 2 ¼ tsp)

2 large eggs

1 tsp salt

4 ½ cups all-purpose flour

For the Filling

1 stick (½ cup) butter, softened

1 cup brown sugar

2 tbsp cinnamon

2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Pinch of nutmeg

For the Frosting

1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened

3 tbsp butter, softened

3 cups powdered sugar

2 tbsp milk (more if needed for consistency)

Optional:

½ cup heavy cream (to pour over the rolls before baking)

Pumpkin purée or extra spice in the dough if you want a stronger fall flavor

How To:

Mix the Dough

In a large bowl, stir together warm milk, butter, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Add eggs and salt, then gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.

Knead 5–7 minutes (by hand or mixer) until smooth and elastic.

Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).

Prepare the Filling

Mix brown sugar, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and nutmeg.

Whip butter till light and fluffy, then add in seasonings till it becomes a light paste.

Roll the dough into a large rectangle (about 14x18 inches).

Spread butter mixture over the dough, then sprinkle with the with your pumpkin spice mixture.

Shape the Rolls

Roll the dough tightly from the long side. Slice into 12 even pieces.

Arrange in a buttered 9x13 pan. Cover and let rise again until puffy (about 30 minutes).

The Secret Step

Right before baking, pour heavy cream over the rolls for extra gooeyness.

Bake

Bake at 350°F for 25–30 minutes, until golden on top but soft in the center.

Make the Frosting

Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar and milk. Mix until fluffy and spreadable.

Frost & Serve

Spread frosting generously over warm rolls so it melts into the swirls. Tear apart, sip some cider or coffee, and enjoy!

Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Maple, Orange & Pecans

A weeknight favorite — crispy, caramelized sprouts tossed with a drizzle of maple syrup, a little orange flavor to brighten it up and a crunch of pecans. Sweet, savory, and so satisfying.

You’ll need:

  • 1 lb Brussels sprouts, halved
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt + pepper
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup or honey
  • Zest of one orange & juice of half
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • optional: dried cranberries added at the end

How to: Toss sprouts with olive oil, orange juice and zest, salt, and pepper. Roast on a sheet pan at 425°F for 20 minutes until golden. Drizzle with maple syrup and sprinkle with pecans before serving.

Tip: You could always candy your pecans before adding them into the Brussel Sprout side to add a slightly more sweet side.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix

Pumpkin pie spice is the flavor of fall in a jar — warm, sweet, and a little spicy. It’s simple to mix at home and adds instant coziness to almost anything. Gift it to friends or family, or keep it for your oatmeal, coffee's, whip cream, pancakes or cinnamon rolls.

You'll Need:

  • 1/4 cup cinnamon
  • tbsp ginger
  • 2 tbsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cloves & allspice
  • 1/2 tsp mace & cardamon

How to:

Mix all ingredients in a small bowl & store in a jar.

A Homey Roast

There’s nothing like a slow roast filling your house with the smell of comfort food. Toss in seasonal veggies — carrots, potatoes, and onions — and let it cook low and slow for a meal that feels like a hug.

You’ll need:

  • 3–4 lb chuck roast
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 6 large carrots, chopped
  • 8 potatoes, quartered
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 2 sprigs rosemary (or thyme)
  • Minced garlic, 5 cloves
  • A splash of red wine
  • Salt + pepper

How to: Season roast generously with salt and pepper. Sear in a Dutch oven until browned. Add veggies, broth, and herbs. Cover and bake at 300°F for 3–4 hours until tender. Serve with crusty bread.

Spiced Poached Pears

Elegant but simple, poached pears are one of those desserts that make an ordinary evening feel special. They’re soft, sweet, and infused with warm spices — perfect for fall gatherings or a cozy night in. Serve them on their own, with a dollop of whipped cream, or over vanilla ice cream for an easy but impressive treat.

You’ll Need:

4 firm pears (Bosc or Anjou work best)

3 cups water

1 cup sugar (or honey for a softer sweetness)

1 cinnamon stick

3–4 whole cloves

2–3 slices of orange peel (or lemon)

Optional: ½ cup white wine or apple cider for extra flavor

How To:

Prepare the Pears

Peel pears, leaving stems intact. Slice a small piece off the bottom of each so they stand upright.

Make the Poaching Liquid

In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, and citrus peel. (Add wine or cider if using.) Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

Poach the Pears

Add pears to the liquid, laying them on their side if needed. Simmer gently for 20–25 minutes, turning occasionally, until pears are tender but not mushy.

Serve

Place pears on plates or in bowls. Reduce the poaching liquid slightly if you’d like a thicker syrup, then spoon it over the pears. Serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel.
