How to Make Your Photo Session Uniquely Yours

Every couple, family, or senior has a different story — and your photos should reflect that. When you look back at your gallery, I want you to see more than just pretty pictures; I want you to see you. The quirks, the comfort, the laughs, and even the quiet pauses — those are what make your session feel alive and true.

The best sessions don’t look the same, because they aren’t meant to. Here’s how to create a session that feels personal, unique, and designed around your story.

The key: don’t overthink it. The more it feels like your everyday life, the more meaningful the photos will be.

1. Think About What Feels Like You

The location, the outfits, and even the activities should be an extension of your life — not a staged version of it.

For couples: Maybe it’s coffee shop dates where you laugh over pastries, mountain hikes where you feel most at peace, or evenings cooking together at home. Think about what feels natural to your relationship and let that guide the session.

For families: Your weekend rituals are gold. Saturday pancakes, family walks by the lake, reading books on the couch, or messy backyard fun — these are the memories you’ll want to see frozen in time.

For seniors: This is such a milestone season. Bring in the pieces that show who you are right now — a sport you play, your car, an instrument you love, or even just a vibe that feels like “grown-up you.” These are the little details you’ll smile at later on.

Wear what makes you feel like yourself: Outfits matter — but not in the Pinterest-perfect way. If you’re tugging at your clothes or feeling like you’re in a costume, it will show. Choose pieces that you feel both confident and comfortable in, with colors that fit your style and the setting.

Personal touches are what make your gallery feel like a memory, not just a portrait.

2. Make It Personal

A session doesn’t have to be fancy to be powerful. It just has to feel like you.

Bring an item: Something simple can make your photos instantly personal — a picnic blanket you always use, your guitar, your favorite jacket, or even a family heirloom. It gives you something to hold, interact with, and connect around

Choose a meaningful location: Instead of choosing a “popular” photo spot, think about places that mean something to you. Where you had your first date. A trail you walk often. The living room where your kids pile up on your lap. These locations tell your story in a way that no styled set ever could.

3 Work With Me (Your Photographer)

This is where I come in. My job is to help you feel comfortable, guide you when needed, and step back when real moments are unfolding. I want to help ignite moments, not fake them.

No stiff poses

You don’t have to worry about “what to do with your hands.” I’ll give gentle direction that feels natural, so your photos look candid and effortless.

I would love for you to see your gallery & have it invoke memories & emotions tied to those moments.

Getting to know you

Before your session, I’ll send you a questionnaire to learn more about your story, your vibe, and what matters to you most. This helps me plan a session that feels tailored, not cookie-cutter.

Creating space for connection

My approach is documentary-style, which means I’m always looking for the real stuff — the glance, the giggle, the in-between. Sometimes that means stepping back and letting you just be. That’s where the magic happens.

Together, we’ll build a session that fits you, not just a trend or mood board.

At the end of the day, the best photos are the ones that feel like home to you. Whether it’s a cozy in-home session, a sunlit walk through the pines, or a field full of laughter, your session should capture what matters most to you right now.

If you’re ready to create a photo experience that feels like your story — let’s dream it up together.
